Stockton Ports News Release
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - On a day when Stockton Ports starter Parker Dunshee turned in the best outing of his career, Stockton's offense fell quiet at San Manuel Stadium. The Inland Empire 66ers had just two hits after the first inning with both hits coming in the ninth, including the game-winning single from Jared Walsh that gave the 66ers a 3-2 walk-off win, their first sudden-death victory of the season.
Inland Empire opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Luis Rengifo singled to start the frame and, two batters later, Walsh delivered a two-run homer to right field that gave Inland Empire a 2-0 lead. After Dunshee walked Brandon Sandoval, he went on to induce a double-play off the bat of Jonah Todd that started a stretch of 22 consecutive batters retired by Ports pitching, including 19 straight set down by Dunshee who would be rendered a no-decision in the contest. Dunshee worked a career-high seven innings and six consecutive perfect frames after the first. He set a new career-high with 11 strikeouts in the contest.
The Ports got a run back in the top of the second. Dairon Blanco led off with a double and after a single by Edwin Diaz put runners at the corners, Luis Barrera grounded out to first to drive in a run and cut the 66ers lead to 2-1.
Inland Empire starter Jason Alexander would give up a one-out single to Nate Mondou in the third and then proceed to retire eight consecutive batters to take him into the sixth. Mondou broke up the stretch in the sixth with a leadoff double to left. With Mondou at third base and two outs, Blanco would single to left field to drive him home and tie the game at 2-2.
Alexander would also be rendered a no-decision as he worked six innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out eight without issuing a walk.
Tyler Stevens (2-2) took over for the 66ers in the ninth and faced the minimum in three scoreless innings of work as he picked up the win for Inland Empire.
Sam Sheehan (1-2) took over for the Ports in the eighth and set the side down in order while notching a pair of strikeouts in his first inning. In the ninth, Sheehan hit Julian Leon with an 0-2 pitch to put the winning run on base. After Sheehan struck out Rengifo, Jahmai Jones singled to left to put runners at the corners with one out. Walsh came up next and drove in his third run of the afternoon with a single to right-center that gave the 66ers a 3-2 win.
Sheehan would suffer the loss, allowing the winning run on two hits in an inning-and-a-third of relief.
Jonah Heim went 0-for-4 on the day and saw his hit streak come to an end at 19 consecutive games. Mondou went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored for Stockton.
The Ports and 66ers wrap up their four-game set on Monday afternoon at San Manuel Stadium. Brian Howard (3-2, 2.53 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Inland Empire right-hander Alex Klonowski (1-1, 5.25 ERA). First pitch is set for 3:05 p.m. PDT.
