St. Lucie Mets News Release

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Yoenis Cespedes began a rehab assignment with St. Lucie and helped the Mets beat the Clearwater Threshers 5-2 on Friday at First Data Field.

Cespedes (hamstring) went 0 for 2 at the plate with a walk and a run. He played six innings in left field and caught the one ball that was to him.

Cespedes started a two-out rally in the first inning when he drew a free pass on five pitches. Patrick Mazeika followed with a wall-scraping double to right field. Cespedes chugged around the bases and scored easily to make it 1-0.

From that point Mets starter Joseph Shaw took over. The right-hander cruised through six scoreless innings. The Mets offense added four more runs through the sixth to build a 5-0 lead.

In a three-run fifth inning Peter Alonso hit a leadoff homer. Alonso, the Mets second round draft pick last year from Florida, was playing in his first game since breaking his hand on April 11.

John Mora added a RBI single in the inning and J.C. Rodriguez's sac fly made it 4-0.

In the sixth inning Wuilmer Becerra stole second base, drawing a throw from catcher Deivi Grullon. As Becerra was sliding safely into second, Jhoan Urena came running home from third to make it 5-0.

Shaw ran into his only trouble with two outs in the top of the seventh. He couldn't put away Drew Stankiewicz to complete seven shutout innings. Stankiewicz knocked a RBI single on a 3-2 pitch to put the Threshers on the board. Josh Torres relieved Shaw and surrendered an RBI infield hit before getting the final out.

Torres struck out the side in the eighth.

Tyler Bashlor struck out two in a scoreless ninth to earn his fifth save.

Shaw went 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. He didn't walk a batter and fanned seven.

The Mets (24-25) and Threshers (27-22) play the middle game of their series at First Data Field on Saturday. First pitch is 6:30 p.m. It is Military Appreciation Night at the ballpark.
