TRAVERSE CITY, MI - With just over a month remaining until Opening Day, the Traverse City Beach Bums continue to add to their roster by signing right-handed pitcher Alex Gillingham.
"Alex is a heck of a player who we expect to be at the top of our rotation," said Manager Dan Rohn. "With his experience and sinker-slider combination, we believe he can be a number one or number two starter for our team."
Gillingham, 24, played last season for the Lancaster Jethawks (California - A+) in the Houston Astros organization. The righthander made three appearances covering eight innings in April. He picked up the win in his lone start last year, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings on April 9. Gillingham was traded to Houston from Colorado on December 4, 2012 along with RHP Alex White in exchange for RHP Wilton Lopez.
In his first two professional seasons in the Rockies system, Gillingham appeared in 32 games (31 starts) with Casper (Pioneer - Rookie) and Asheville (South Atlantic - A). He led all of the Minor Leagues with a 3.29 groundball to flyout ratio in 2012 while with Asheville. He also was the lone pitcher to throw a complete game in the Pioneer League in 2011, doing so on August 22, despite picking up the loss in the game.
A native of Thousand Oaks, CA, Gillingham was originally drafted by the Rockies in the 11th round of the 2011 draft out of Loyola Marymount University. In three seasons with the Lions, Gillingham made 37 starts and compiled a 14-12 record with a 4.22 ERA.
The Traverse City Beach Bums are members of the Frontier League, an independent baseball league with teams in seven Midwest states. The Beach Bums are entering their ninth season of play in 2014. Season tickets are now on sale. The Beach Bums will be playing their season opener at Wuerfel Park on a FANtastic Fireworks Friday, May 23.
