Calgary Stampeders News Release
Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce that import defensive back Jonathan Hefney has signed with the team. As per club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Hefney played three full seasons and parts of a fourth with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 2009-12 and earned East Division all-star honours on three occasions (2009, 2011 and 2012) and CFL all-star recognition twice (2009 and 2011).
"Jonathan is a very good football player who has accomplished many great things during his first four years in the CFL," said Hufnagel. "I look forward to seeing him do the same as a member of the Stampeders."
Hefney started all 18 games for the Blue Bombers in 2012, seeing action at both halfback and strong-side linebacker, and led the club with 74. He also had four fumble recoveries, three special-teams tackles, one sack, four tackles for loss, three pass knockdowns, one forced fumble and one interception.
For his CFL career, the 28-year-old Rock Hill, S.C., native has played 60 games and amassed 241 tackles, including nine tackles for loss, two sacks, 13 interceptions, 26 pass knockdowns, six fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.
He was the East Division's finalist for the Most Outstanding Rookie award in 2009.
The former University of Tennessee standout was signed as an undrafted free agent by the National Football League's Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008 and has also been with the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions.
In other transaction news, the Stampeders have released non-import offensive lineman Dale Stevenson.
