Calgary Stampeders News Release
The Calgary Stampeders announce that import receiver Antoine (Shaky) Smithson has signed with the club. As per club policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
Smithson, 25, made three different All-America teams in 2010 as he starred as a kick returned for the University of Utah, leading the country with a 19.1-yard average on punt returns. He logged 572 yards on 30 punt returns that season and scored a pair of touchdowns. Smithson also caught 25 passes for 383 yards and three majors and returned 21 kickoffs for 507 yards. He was named All-Mountain West Conference second team as a returner. In 2009, Smithson made 13 catches for 100 yards, carried the ball 27 times for 99 yards and three touchdowns, returned 13 punts for 123 yards and 22 kickoffs for 543 yards.
He signed as an undrafted free agent with the National Football League's Green Bay Packers in 2011 but missed both the 2011 and 2012 seasons after being placed on the injured reserve list.
Smithson will take the field with the Stampeders for the first time this morning at McMahon Stadium as Calgary's training camp, presented by bet365.net, continues.
