New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ -Three home runs by the bottom of the order for the St. Paul Saints, including two from the Tripp Brothers, was enough to trip up the Jackals in the finale of a four game series, as New Jersey dropped their third straight to St. Paul by a score of 9-3.
St. Paul took three of four from New Jersey in the season opening series, as the Jackals now head to Sioux City.
For the second straight game, New Jersey fell behind in the first inning as the Saints scratched out four runs off of starter Craig Bennigson, who was making his debut for the Jackals.
The inning started when Saints' lead-off man Dan Kaczrowski reached on a throwing error and Adam Frost singled. After a walk to Joey Becker to load the bases, Craig Brazell laced a two-run double to right to give the Saints a 2-0 lead. Willie Cabrera drove in the games third run on a Sac Fly to center, and Brandon Tripp tabbed his first RBI of the day on a sharp single to right, driving in Brazell to make it 4-0.
After New Jersey got a run back on an RBI single by first baseman Yazy Arbelo in the top of the fourth, the Saints went long distance in the bottom half of the inning. Brandon Tripp and Dwight Childs both went yard with solo home runs extending the St. Paul lead to 6-1.
New Jersey quickly answered with a solo home run by Jeremy Barnes, his first homer of the season, to cut the lead back to four runs, 6-2.
However, as was the case all afternoon, the closer the Jackals got the Saints had an answer.
In the bottom of the sixth with two out, Jordan Tripp cracked a solo homer off of Bennigson ending his day, and extending the Saints lead back to 7-2.
In his first start as a Jackal, Bennigson allowed seven runs, five earned, in five and two-thirds innings pitched.
St. Paul starter, Anthony Claggett wasn't overpowering, but effective. He went six innings, scattering eight hits and two runs to get the victory.
Chris Duffy went 3-for-4 for New Jersey, while Cuevas extending his hitting streak to three games, going 2-for-2.
Brandon Tripp led the Saints with a 3-for-4 afternoon with the homer and two RBI.
The Jackals never got a chance to bat in the top half of the ninth inning with the score 9-3, because a heavy rain storm came through the area forcing the game to be called.
The Jackals (1-3) will visit Sioux City, Iowa on Monday to start a three game series against the Explorers. David Filak is scheduled to start for New Jersey. First pitch is at 8:05, and you can hear it on Jackals.com via the Listen Live icon.
