Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The Mavericks scored first, but the Bakersfield Blaze scored last - ten times - and leveled the High Desert club on Sunday afternoon at Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield.

With the club returning home late the previous night, there was mild concern that fatigue may play a role. That concern was alleviated early.

After the Mavs scored an unearned run in the top of the 1st inning off first-time Blaze starter Mike Dennhardt (W, 2-3), the Blaze made sure that was the last they would hear from the opposition.

In the 2nd, Bakersfield took the lead for good off Mavs starter Jordan Pries (L, 3-3). Steve Selsky led off the inning with a single, and with one out, Juan Silva doubled him home to tie the game, 1-1. Ryan Wright followed immediately with a base hit to leftcenter, scoring Silva, and putting Bakersfield on top, 2-1.

Two innings later, the Blaze put it away, scoring seven runs in the 4th on eight hits and two walks. Pries left with two outs in the inning, and ended up giving up five runs, but the first reliever for High Desert fared even worse, as South Korean born Seon Gi Kim gave up five additional runs in just one inning. By the end of the 4th, the Blaze led 9-1.

The Blaze added one final run in the 5th on a Marquez Smith double, but the game was long since over by then. In all, the Blaze offense spread the wealth, as five different Blaze had multi-hit games, and eight of nine starters reached base at least once.

On the pitching side, Dennhardt's five-inning start marked the continuing improvement of the Blaze pitching staff, and the club has now held its opposition to two runs or fewer in five of the last six games. Dennhardt was followed by two innings apiece from Brooks Pinckard and Kyle McMyne to wrap up the easy Sunday win.

The victory is the third in a row for the Blaze, tying a season high in that department, and the nine run win was the second largest margin of victory on the year. The club improved to 8-10 at home, and 14-29, overall, with two more home games against High Desert to follow.

The series with the Mavs continues Monday night at 7:30pm on Carl's Jr. Dollar Monday -- General Admission seats and hot dogs are just one buck all night long! Gates open at 6:30pm.
