ATLANTA, GA - After traveling to Atlanta to defend their undefeated season, the RailHawks (3W-2T-1L) endured a red card and a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Atlanta Silverbacks (3W-1T-2L). Scoring began in the 6th minute when Atlanta forward Ruben Luna beat the RailHawks' offsides trap to create a two-on-one situation, ending with Luna squeaking his shot past RailHawks goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald. The Silverbacks went on to net a late header from Martyn Lancaster in the 76th minute after the RailHawks' Floyd Franks suffered a red card in the 54th minute, leaving them a man down.
"Tonight's result was unfortunate," said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke. "The slow start put us in a hole, but I thought we regrouped well and earned the better of the chances. The guys fought hard and had a couple things gone the other way, I think we could have had a more favorable result."
At the beginning of the second half the RailHawks looked as if they would surely find the net, defending the counterattack well with a sprawling save by Akira Fitzgerald in the 49th minute. But the attacks were marred by the sending off of Floyd Franks, who was shown a red card after a tangle up with a Silverbacks attacker.
The RailHawks continued to show attacking prowess despite being down a man in the second half. In the 62nd minute, their efforts were thwarted by a late clearance in the Silverbacks 18 yard box. The Silverbacks went on to score a header in the 76th minute when Martyr Lancaster connected with a cross from Danny Barrera.
The RailHawks will be featured in the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, May 21st against the Carolina Dynamo at WakeMed Soccer Park. Tickets for the match can be purchased through the St. Lawrence Homes Box Office by calling 919-459-8144 or e-mailing tickets@CarolinaRailHawks.com.
