Suns Defeat M-Braves, Take over South Division

PEARL, MS -- The Jacksonville Suns hit two solo home runs en route to a 3-1 victory over the Mississippi Braves Saturday night at Trustmark Park. With the win, the Suns move into first place in the Southern League South Division with a half game lead over the M-Braves. The series continues with game three Sunday at 1:00 PM.

Mississippi (25-17) scored one run on seven hits while Jacksonville (24-15) scored three runs on eight hits. Jose Martinez and Edward Salcedo led the M-Braves offensively with two-hit nights at the plate.

Jake Marisnick drove in two of the Suns' three runs. He launched a solo homer onto the berm in left-center, giving Jacksonville a quick 1-0 lead in the first.

The M-Braves tied the game at 1-1 in the second. Salcedo singled and Martinez doubled to start the frame. Salcedo then came in to score on a Jaime Pedroza ground out to short.

The Suns responded in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Noah Perio singled and took second on a sacrifice bunt. He then moved to third on a ground out and came in to score on Marisnick's single to right field.

Kyle Jensen launched his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, in the top of the eighth to extend the Suns lead to 3-1.

Sam Dyson (1-3) tossed five innings for the Suns. He limited the M-Braves to one earned run on six hits and a strikeout. Michael Brady (S, 7) came on in the ninth to record his seventh save of the season. He struck out one batter.

Michael Lee (3-2) worked five frames, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and a home run. He struck out two batters in his return to the M-Braves pitching staff.

Sunday, the M-Braves send lefty Alex Wood (2-2, 0.82) to the hill in game three of this five-game series. He'll counter Suns right-hander Matt Neil (1-2, 4.09). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM. Gates open at 12:00 PM.
