May 18, 2013 - North American League (NAmL)
San Rafael Pacifics News Release

San Rafael Pacifics traveled to California State Prison San Quentin on Saturday, May 18, to kick off their spring training schedule and came away with a 17-3 victory over the prison's All-Star team.

The Pacifics - playing with a split squad roster - were held hitless until the fifth inning, when second baseman Price Kendall (2-for-4, 2 RBI, HR, 3 runs) broke up San Quentin's no-hit bid with a RBI double, and later scored on a three-run home run by Darrick Hale (2-for-6, 3 RBI, HR, 2 runs). Left fielder Chase Fontaine (3-for-6, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 3 runs) went back-to-back with Hale, a solo shot to right. Kyle Dhanani also had a home run in a winning cause for San Rafael.

Steve Detwiler - San Rafael High - was on base twice, stole a base and scored a run, while starting at designated hitter for the Pacifics. Centerfielder Zack Pace was on base four times, and hit his first home run of the spring in the ninth inning. Pace did not hit a home run in 2012 for San Rafael, but the Sonoma State product finished the day 2-for-2 with three runs scored.

The All-Stars from San Quentin were led offensively shortstop Ke' Lam (2-for-4, run) and center fielder Chris Marshall (1-for-4, 3 SB, run). Their starter, 30-year old Jeff DuMont, went 4 1/3 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits with three strikeouts. He was helped defensively by a diving play by second baseman Cleo Cloman - who dove with his back toward home plate to rob Price Kendall of a would-be base hit in the second.

Pacifics starter, Logan Odom, threw two shutout innings while allowing just one hit to San Quentin's Chris Smith. He finished his day with three strikeouts before giving the ball to Ross Pomerantz - Marin Academy - in the third. Pomerantz also threw two innings, allowing just one hit while striking out five. Casey Russell - son of Pacifics pitching coach, Jeff Russell - allowed two runs (one earned) and four hits while striking out four in his two innings of work. Right-hander J.J. Whetsel (2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER) and David Slovak combined for the final two innings of work to preserve the win for San Rafael.

The Pacifics travel to Dan Foley Park in Vallejo on Sunday for a double header against the East Bay Lumberjacks as they continue their spring training schedule. Coverage for both games can be found at pacificsbaseball.com and on the Pacifics' twitter feed @SRPacifics.
