Burlington Bees News Release
The Burlington Bees left the tying run at third base as the Cedar Rapids Kernels edged the Bees 5-4 in the first game of the series at Perfect Game Field on Tuesday night.
The Bees tried to come back and pick up their first win of the season when trailing after seven innings, but David Hurlbut pitched out of trouble to give Cedar Rapids its league-leading 25th win. Pedro Toribio, Wendell Soto and Kyle Johnson all hit one-out singles off of Manuel Soliman, with Soto driving home Toribio. Soliman was replaced by Hurlbut with men at first and second and proceeded to strike out Sherman Johnson for the second out. Wade Hinkle singled home Soto, but Bolaski struck out swinging to end the game.
The Bees (12-21) and Kernels (25-11) were locked in a pitcher's duel through the first five innings, as Ryan Crowley (2-1) and Brett Lee (3-2) were exchanging zeroes on the mound; however, in the sixth, Crowley surrendered a grand slam to Adam Brett Walker to give the Kernels a 4-0 lead. Crowley almost got out of the gym, but he walked Dalton Hicks with two men on to bring Walker to the plate. The slugger blasted a ball over the batter's eye in center field.
Burlington answered back with two runs in the seventh on a RBI single by Toribio that scored Chevy Clarke and a groundout by Soto, which scored Toribio. Toribio stole two bases in the game, both of which turned out to be put him in position to score.
In the bottom of the seventh, Byron Buxton hit a fly ball to center field, which was dropped by Clarke. Buxton circled the bases to pull the Kernels ahead 5-2. That play turned out to be the difference in the game, as the Bees fell 5-4.
Burlington will face Cedar Rapids in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Alex Keudell will start game one against Hudson Boyd, with Eduard Santos starting game two for the Bees. The Kernels have not announced their game two starter.
