Myrtle Beach, SC (May 13, 2013) - Myrtle Beach outplayed Salem for a fourth straight night, handing the Red Sox an 8-3 setback on Monday to complete the series sweep at TicketReturn.Com Field. Although the Red Sox responded to an early 3-0 deficit by tying it up 3-3 in the top of fourth, the Pelicans quickly retaliated and never looked back, scoring twice in their half of the fourth, twice more in the fifth, and once more in the seventh. Preston Beck's RBI triple put the Pelicans on top for good, driving in Chris Grayson with nobody out in the fourth.
Nick Martinez tossed six innings and surrendered just three runs on six hits, earning the victory to improve to 4-2. Joe Van Meter was perfect in three frames out of the Myrtle Beach bullpen, retiring nine straight Sox to pick up his second save.
The Pelicans rallied for three in the last of the first against Salem starter Mike McCarthy. Drew Robinson's RBI double drove in Luis Sardinas to give the home team a lead just two batters into the inning. McCarthy settled down and tossed a scoreless second and third, but surrendered two more runs in the fourth and yielded back-to-back hits to start the fifth before getting the hook.
Five Pelicans recorded two-hit nights, with Royce Bolinger finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI. Six different Red Sox registered one hit apiece, with Garin Cecchini and Brandon Jacobs each going 1-for-4 with a double. Dave Renfroe went 1-for-4 with a triple.
Having dropped six straight, the Salem Sox continue their road trip against another struggling team in the Carolina Mudcats, who have lost four straight against Lynchburg to begin their homestand. The Sox and Mudcats will kick off their three-game series at 7:15 on Tuesday, with Mike Augliera and Cody Anderson the scheduled starters.
