Tides Edge Chiefs in Wild 10-Inning Game

May 13, 2013 - International League (IL1) - Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost 8-7 to the Norfolk Tides in a 10-inning thriller on Monday afternoon. The Chiefs made two multi-run comebacks on a chilly and windy day, with Jeff Howell's ninth-inning home run temporarily tying the score. Russ Canzler's go-ahead home run in the 10th, however, proved to be the game-winner for the Tides.

Norfolk (26-12) kicked off the scoring in the second inning. After Travis Ishikawa doubled to lead off the frame, he moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt. Brandon Wood then singled into center field to score a run and give Norfolk a 1-0 lead.

The Tides wouldn't stop there, though. In the third, Canzler worked a one-out walk, and following a Danny Valencia single, Travis Ishikawa tallied a singled to bring home a run. He advanced to third on an error by third baseman Carlos Rivero, which scored Valencia, and then scored during the next at-bat on a wild pitch by Danny Rosenbaum.

Syracuse (14-23), however, would strike back. Mike Costanzo began the team's first comeback with a third-inning solo home run off Tides starter Jair Jurrjens, cutting the lead to 4-1. The long ball was Costanzo's fifth home run of the season.

In the fourth, the Syracuse comeback continued. Jeff Kobernus and Will Rhymes led off the frame with back-to-back singles. Two hitters later, Rivero doubled to center field to score both runners. After a Zach Walters pop out, Micah Owings tripled to left-center field to tie the game at four. Costanzo followed by knocking in Owings with a single, and the Chiefs went into the fifth inning with a 5-4 lead.

That lead, though, would be short lived. With two outs in the frame and two runners aboard, Trayvon Robinson singled home the tying run. The next batter, Luis Exposito, duplicated that feat with a single to give Norfolk the lead, 6-5. Jason Pridie subsequently drove home Robinson for an insurance run, ending Rosenbaum's afternoon after four-and-two-thirds innings.

The Chiefs' second comeback started with an eighth-inning score. Kobernus singled to lead off the inning and then stole second. With one out, Chris Marrero doubled to cut the deficit to 7-6.

In the bottom of the ninth, Syracuse evened the score when Howell launched a one-out home run over the left-field wall against Norfolk reliever Jairo Asencio. The home run was Howell's first with the Chiefs in 40 games over the past two seasons.

Once again, though, it didn't take Norfolk long to respond. With two outs in the 10th, Canzler blasted a home run over the right-field wall off of Chiefs closer Erik Davis. Canzler's sixth homer of the season gave the Tides an 8-7 lead.

In the bottom of the frame, Syracuse nearly launched another comeback. Rhymes started the inning with a double before moving to third base on a Francisco Soriano sacrifice bunt. Carlos Rivero followed with a sharp ground ball to third base, but Valencia made a diving stop at third to prevent the run from scoring and retired Rivero at first base. After Walters was hit with an Asencio pitch, Owings struck out to end the game.

Syracuse returns to action on Tuesday night at 7:00 when it welcomes Columbus to NBT Bank Stadium for a four-game set. The Chiefs will send right-hander Ross Ohlendorf to the mound.
