RailHawks Jump to Top of NASL with 5-2 Victory

CARY, NC - The crowd of 6,708 braved a short rain storm and were treated to seven goals in the Carolina RailHawks (3W-2T-0L, 11pts) 5-2 victory over the San Antonio Scorpions (0W-2T-3L, 2pts) at WakeMed Soccer Park. RailHawks captain Floyd Franks opened the scoring in the 13th minute before forwards Brian Shriver and Zack Schilawski would go on to score two goals apiece. The Scorpions would tally in the 20th and 65th minute with goals from Hans Denissen and Nikola Vasilic.

"We are very happy with tonight's result," said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke. "Anytime you score five goals you are delighted and some of those goals were really special. The crowd was great tonight and everyone felt privileged to play in front of them. I am glad we could reward the fans with a victory."

The RailHawks jumped on the board first in the 13th minute when Schilawski laid a pass off to Franks, who blasted a one-time finish from 20 yards out. The Scorpions quickly responded and were rewarded with a dubious penalty kick in the 20th minute. Denissen would bury the kick from the spot into the left corner giving RailHawks goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald little chance.

In the 37th minute, Carolina was rewarded for their hard pressure when Shriver challenged a back pass to Scorpions goalkeeper Pat Hannigan. Hannigan's missed clearance went directly to Schilawski. Schilawski calmly placed the ball into the net for his first of the season and the RailHawks a 2-1 lead going into halftime.

In the second half the RailHawks continued their dominace with two tallies within one minute and fifteen seconds apart. Midfielder Austin da Luz would get the assist on both with two pinpoint crosses. The first in the 48th minute, da Luz hit a low curling cross that Shriver would finish for his first goal of the night. In the 50th minute, da Luz found the head of Schilawski, who had little trouble beating Hannigan to the near post for his second of the night.

In the 85th minute, Shriver and Brian Ackley would team up to put the match to rest with the Railhawks 5th goal of the night. Ackley collected the ball on the left hand side of the Scorpions box, drawing in the defense. A perfectly timed ball found Shriver for his second goal of the night.

The RailHawks return to NASL action on the road when they travel to face the Atlanta Silverbacks on Saturday, May 18th. The match will be broadcast live on www.CarolinaRailHawks.com/Live. The RailHawks return to WakeMed Soccer Park the following week to host a Second Round match in the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, May 21st.
