Modesto Falls in Extras, Dropping Eighth Straight

May 4, 2013 - California League (CalL1) - Modesto Nuts News Release

VISALIA, CA (May 2nd, 2013) - Modesto's early season frustrations continued on Thursday night in Visalia as they lost 5-4 in 12 innings to the Rawhide.

With the defeat, Modesto (9-18) has now dropped eight in a row, marking their longest losing streak since becoming a Rockies' affiliate in 2005.

With two on and only one out in the bottom of the 12th, pinch-hitter Kerry Jenkins delivered a walk-off RBI single against Kraig Sitton (0-1), as the Rawhide were able to complete a three-game sweep against the Nuts. Modesto lost the three games in the series by a combined four runs, including two games that ended in walk-off fashion.

Willy Paredes (1-1) got the win, tossing three scoreless innings in relief, striking out five batters. The two teams combined for 32 strikeouts in the game, racking up 16 apiece.

Modesto jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 3rd on a two-out three-run homer by Harold Riggins, his second of the year.

After cruising through the first four innings, allowing three hits and no runs while striking out seven, Nuts starter Chris Jensen ran into trouble in the fifth. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for red-hot Mike Lamb, who belted an opposite-field grand slam to give Visalia a 4-3 lead.

Brian Humphries hit a two-out solo home run to right-field in the seventh to tie the contest 4-4.

Modesto's bullpen was terrific, going 5 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Jensen until the Rawhide finally broke though in the 12th against Sitton. Visalia went 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position, leaving 15 on the bases.

The Rawhide (18-9) have now won 13 straight at home, while winning 12 of their last 13 overall.

Modesto now returns home to John Thurman Field to open up a seven-game home stand, starting with a four-game series against the Blaze. RHP Ben Alsup (1-2, 3.91) will take the hill for Modesto, opposite RHP James Allen (1-2, 6.31) for Bakersfield. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
