JUPITER, Fla. - Excellent pitching. Little run support.

That's been the theme to the Hammerheads' first 15 games this season, and it held true again Friday night in their 2-1 loss to the Charlotte Stone Crabs at Roger Dean Stadium.

RHP Jacob Esch pitched lights-out, allowing just one unearned run on five hits and no walks in five innings. He threw first-pitch strikes to 12 of the 19 batters he faced and recorded 44 of 56 pitches overall for strikes.

Despite a 0-1 record, Esch has yet to allow an earned run in 14 innings this season. The Hammerheads have scored a total of six runs in Esch's three starts.

Friday night marks the fifth time in the last six games that a Hammerheads starting pitcher hasn't allowed an earned run. Through 15 games, Jupiter's starters have a collective 1.98 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in 68.1 innings.

LHP Ryan Carpenter struck out 10 in seven innings for the Stone Crabs, lowering his season ERA to 0.95. RHP Austin Hubbard pitched a spotless ninth to record his first save of the season.

Ross Wilson provided the Hammerheads' only run with his first homer of the year, a line drive to left field that lead off the fifth inning. Wilson has scored a run in seven of his last eight games.

Christian Yelich was activated from the seven-day disabled list before Friday night's game. He went 1-for-4 from the leadoff spot. Yelich hit .330/.404/.519 with 46 extra-base hits and 20 stolen bases for the Hammerheads last season.

Ryan Rieger went 0-for-2, snapping his five-game hitting streak.

Jupiter will throw RHP Jose Urena in tomorrow's rubber match against Charlotte at Roger Dean Stadium. Urena stymied the opposition in his last start, tossing six one-hit innings of shutout ball. He'll oppose RHP Parker Markel (0-2, 7.36 ERA), who will start for the Stone Crabs.
