Huge Lynchburg Comeback Upends Potomac's Strong Start

April 7, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL) Potomac Nationals

Woodbridge, VA-Through six innings on Saturday night at Pfitzner Stadium, Potomac RHP Taylor Jordan was in control. Jordan had not surrendered a run or a walk, while allowing just three separated singles and striking out four.

The Nationals has jumped on the board with an RBI single ripped by 1B Kevin Keyes into the left field corner in the 1st inning.

The Nationals tacked on an additional run in the 4th frame on back-to-back doubles by 3B Cutter Dykstra and DH Adrian Sanchez, both to right field.

As Jordan cruised through his sixth scoreless frame, the P-Nats' sticks provided two additional runs to take a 5-0 lead courtesy of a bases loaded double play ball by CF Michael Taylor and a RBI double to center field by SS Jason Martinson, who went 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

Then what proved to be a fateful inning for the Nationals, the 7th stanza featured an epic eight run comeback by Lynchburg. The Hillcats scored four earned runs on four hits off LHP Christian Meza highlighted by a solo home run by LF Robby Hefflinger, and a two-run double by RF Will Skinner.

RHP Colin Bates (0-1), the losing pitcher, saw no part of an inning in the 7th, and took the tough luck loss after allowing three unearned runs on one hit.

LHP Matt Grace (BS 1) came in to relieve Bates and allowed only an RBI fielder's choice to 2B Ross Heffley to get Potomac out of the 7th inning.

The winning pitcher, RHP Wilson Rivera was solid in relieving starting pitcher, RHP A.J. Holland, who gave up five runs, four earned, on eight hits through 4.2 innings. Rivera pitched 1.1 scoreless innings and struck out two.

The Hillcats pounced on Grace for an additional pair of runs in the 9th inning to stick in the dagger via an Elmer Reyes two-run double to the left field corner. Reyes finished the evening 4-for-5 at the plate with one run scored and two RBIs.

Additionally, DH David Rohm supplied a 4-for-5 showing with two runs and two RBIs.

One run in the 9th inning for the P-Nats off an RBI triple to center field by Martinson proved too little too late for the home club.

The Lynchburg Hillcats wrap up their three game Opening Weekend series with a rubber game Sunday at Pfitzner Stadium with a 1:05pm first pitch. Gates open at 12:00pm.

Kids Eat Free on Sunday presented by: Little Caesars Team Dumfries & Haymarket and Kids Run the Bases after the game.
