Hawks Take 3-1 Series Lead with 11-4 Game 4 Win

Brendan Leipsic and Ty Rattie had five points apiece as the Portland Winterhawks won Game 4 of their first round series against the Everett Silvertips 11-4.

The Hawks took a 3-1 series lead over Everett with the win and can advance to the second round with a victory in Game 5 tomorrow night in Portland at Veterans Memorial Coliseum at 7 p.m.

Rattie had a hat trick to go along with two assists, while Leipsic had two goals and three assists. Linemate Nic Petan added two assists as the trio combined for 12 points in the win, including nine points in the first period alone. Defenseman Tyler Wotherspoon added two goals and two assists.

It was the Hawks' first 10-goal game in the playoffs since an 11-2 win over Spokane in Game 1 of a first round series in 1987.

The Hawks burst out of the gates with five first period goals, starting with a goal from Rattie 8:02 into the frame. Later in the period with Portland on a 5-on-3 power play, Leipsic and Chase De Leo scored consecutive goals with the man advantage just 42 seconds apart to take a 3-0 lead. Leipsic struck again for his second goal of the period at the 13:42 mark to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.

Everett got on the board with a goal by Josh Winquist at the 14:51 mark, but the Hawks got that one back when Tyler Wotherspoon scored at the 18:03 mark to make it 5-1 after 20 minutes. Portland's five goals in the first tied a franchise record for goals in a period in the playoffs.

With the Silvertips on a 5-on-3 power play, Winquist scored his second of the game 1:56 into the second to cut Portland's lead to 5-2. The Hawks went back up by four when Wotherspoon's outlet pass sprung Rattie on a breakaway, who beat Everett goaltender Austin Lotz to make it 6-2 at the 6:42 mark. Rattie then completed the hat trick with a goal at the 14:51 mark to give the Hawks a 7-2 advantage, followed by Wotherspoon's second of the game at the 16:54 mark to give Portland an 8-2 lead going into the third.

Portland extended the lead to 9-2 with a goal from Joey Baker at the 12:02 mark of the third, followed by Everett's Cole MacDonald scoring to make it a 9-3 game. Taylor Leier made it 10-3 at the 14:24 mark, with Everett's Reid Petryk scoring to make it 10-4. Josh Hanson added a late power play goal to round out the scoring and give the Hawks the 11-4 win.
