Walla Walla Sweets News Release
WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Walla Walla Sweets are excited to announce the signing of award-winning radio talent Howard Hoffman as the play-by-play broadcaster for the 2013 season. Hoffman enjoyed a 40-year career in radio that took him to San Francisco, New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Hoffman will make his first foray into baseball broadcasting by joining the Sweets as the voice of the team both at home and on the road.
"We have been fortunate as a team to have talented broadcasters every season and Howard is no different," said Sweets vice president and general manager Zachary Fraser. "With Howard's level of experience in radio and his enthusiasm for the game of baseball our fans can expect another exceptional season of broadcasting."
Hoffman began his radio career in 1971 during his senior year at Suffern (NY) High School for the schools radio station. He landed his first Top 40 job in 1973 and just one year later was hired at WDRQ in Detroit for his production and on-air skills. Howard worked for a number of different stations in the nation's top markets before he moved to Los Angeles, where he began a 17-year career as the Director of Creative Services for KABC Radio. During his time at KABC, he developed a number of promo campaigns that won awards, including three RAB National Silver Microphone Awards for Broadcast Excellence and two Radio and Production National First Place Awards. In 2008 he received the 2008 RACIE Gold Award for his voice work on an REI advertising campaign.
"This is a dream job for anyone who grew up loving the game. I'm genuinely excited to be working with a great team that's become an instant tradition in the Walla Walla Valley...and to be a voice for the citizens of Sweets Country," said Hoffman. "As a rookie in the broadcast booth, I know I'll learn more from our fans than from anywhere else. I'll be keeping the lines of communication open through social media. It's going to be a truly interactive live experience with every broadcast, so bring your smartphones to the games and let's have some fun this summer.
"As a broadcaster, I'm looking forward to the experience of getting to know the players and coaches and to bring their stories to the listeners. As a fan, I really want to thank the Sweets organization for this opportunity to see all the games for free. It ought to be a great season."
Hoffman moved to Walla Walla with his wife Bonnie where he continues to work as a voiceover actor and where he manages his own full-service audio production house, Vitaphone Studios.
