D-Fenders Slip up against Warriors

SANTA CRUZ, CA - The Los Angeles D-Fenders were unable to hold on down the stretch against the Santa Cruz Warriors, dropping a 98-92 contest in the first of a three-game road trip.

The D-Fenders jumped out to a 26-22 lead after sinking 11-of-12 free throws in the first quarter and outscored the Warriors by six after shooting 57.1 percent (12-21 FG) in the second to go up 54-44 at halftime.

The D-Fenders, who forced the Warriors into 18 turnovers in the first half and eight in the third quarter (32 total turnovers), maintained a 74-65 lead heading into the final frame. However, the D-Fenders lead faded as the Warriors shot 17-of-17 free throws and won the fourth quarter 33-18.

Courtney Fortson tallied a team-high 19 points and five steals, Elijah Millsap finished with 15 points, six rebounds, seven assists and six steals, and Gary Flowers contributed 15 points, six rebounds and three steals for the D-Fenders. Meanwhile, Lazar Hayward tied for the fourth most rebounds in team history, pulling down 17 boards (T-4th; Earl Barron, 3/17/09 vs. Sioux Falls) and dropping in 11 points.

Snapping a two-game losing streak, the Warriors were guided by Hilton Armstrong (18 points, 11 rebounds) and Cameron Jones (18 points). Additionally, Darington Hobson recorded 15 points along with seven rebounds, and Taylor Griffin registered 12 points and 17 rebounds in the win.

The D-Fenders continue their string of road games on Friday, February 22nd against the Reno Bighorns (NBA Affiliates: Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, Utah Jazz). Tip-off is slated for 7pm.
