The Canton Charge fell to the Erie BayHawks, 101-96, at the Memorial Civic Center on Wednesday night. The loss dropped Canton to 20-13, while Erie improved to 18-14. The BayHawks pulled ahead 3-1 in the season series between the two teams, with the Charge still leading the East Division overall by 1.5 games.

The Charge raced out to a 29-20 lead after one quarter thanks to sound work on both ends of the floor, hitting 10-of-19 shots for 53% while holding the BayHawks to just 5-of-20 from the floor for 25%. Erie began to come alive in the second quarter by getting into the paint, creating higher-percentage scoring opportunities. The BayHawks scored 20 of their 32 second period points in the paint while hitting 59% of their shots. Canton held on for a 56-52 advantage at the half.

The visitors continued to build momentum after the intermission by locking down defensively, outscoring the Charge 14-6 in the first 7:49 of the third and forcing them out of their offensive rhythm. Erie hit 50% of their attempts and ultimately outscored Canton 29-15 to hold an 81-71 lead heading into the final quarter.

With Erie leading 89-77 with 6:24 to play, the Charge would make a quick 8-0 run in a span of 1:59 to cut the deficit to 89-85. Kyle Gibson sprinted down the left side of the court for a driving layup that missed after being contested, and Erie's ensuing fast break resulted in a D.J. Kennedy three-pointer to put them back up 92-85. The BayHawks increased their lead to 10 with 1:54 left to play, and Canton fought back again with a 7-0 run to pull within three at 99-96. But a foul in the bonus with 14 seconds left allowed Kennedy to hit both attempts and put the game away.

Canton was paced by Josh Selby's 19 points, six rebounds, three assists and one steal in 37 minutes. Ryan Rossiter came off the bench to provide 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting with seven rebounds, one steal and one block in 26 minutes. Gibson finished with 15 points with seven assists and three boards in 29 minutes. JaJuan Johnson added nine points, seven rebounds and three blocks in 27 minutes. Both teams combined for 59 free-throws in the game, with the Charge hitting 27-of-31 for 87% while the BayHawks hit 23-of-28 for 82% from the charity stripe.

Kyle Goldcamp netted a game-high 25 points for Erie with nine rebounds and one steal in 38 minutes. Kennedy poured in 23 points, including 11-of-11 from the free-throw line, with six rebounds, six assists and four steals in 41 minutes. Henry Sims provided 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks before fouling out after 26 minutes. Cory Higgins scored 12 points with five rebounds and a steal in 34 minutes. Each team scored 54 points in the paint in the game.

The two teams will meet again in Erie on Saturday, February 23rd at 7:00 p.m. at the Erie Insurance Arena.

(On tonight's game): "We started out doing well but you have to give credit to Kyle Goldcamp who played great. I told our guys that I don't think they ran one play for him, but he ended up with 25 (points) and 9 (rebounds) which made him a big difference in the game. I give credit to Gene (Cross) and his players because we were playing good but then got outscored midway. D.J. Kennedy played well and he does a really good job of knowing who he is and what his strengths are. He hit five shots and went to the free throw line 11 times. We do have our moments and I don't think the break was an excuse for tonight."

(On being aggressive and fouling late in the game): "At end of the first quarter, I pointed out that you don't want to take away their aggressiveness especially Jorge (Gutierrez). You have to put the mental aspect into it and know when to foul them, not 35 to 40 feet away from the basket. I told everyone that there is always something different we can do. It's easy to point the finger, but with the score that close, there are one or two things that we could have done to change it."

(On tough offensive stretches tonight): "Offensively, I think we turn to trying to make it happen right away. There's a fine line between staying aggressive and realizing you don't have it. It's unlike us to give away 32 points (in a quarter) and I bet we were around 50 percent (offensively). We got guys running to the three-point line when they can run to the basket for a layup. The worst part about it is when you have a turnover and then its two points back (on the other end) if you don't make it then you don't get the rebound. Gene did a great job of adjusting, Henry (Sims) was a handful and I think we forgot about Kyle, who had to have a season-high tonight."
