Omaha Lancers News Release
Ralston, Neb. - The Omaha Lancers scored once in every period Wednesday evening and Alex Lyon won his fifth straight start in net as the Lancers outlasted the Sioux Falls Stampede 3-2 in front of 2,615 fans at Ralston Arena. With the win, Omaha improved to 28-17 on the year and is now in sole possession of third place in the Western Conference with 56 standings points. The Lancers have now won a season-high six straight games and 11 of the team's last 12 tilts overall. The victory also moved Omaha's record against Sioux Falls to 3-1 on the year as the home team has now won each of the first four head-to-head showdowns.
Omaha opened the scoring a little over eight minutes into the contest when Gage Hough found Trent Samuels-Thomas at the left side of the net who made no mistake in sending in his third goal of the season. Dominic Racobaldo notched the secondary assist on the even strength strike buried 8:14 into the first period. The goal marked the 25th time in 45 games this season that the Lancers have scored first as Omaha improved to 20-5 when firing the game's opening salvo this year. Sioux Falls responded quickly though and evened the game just over two minutes later when Kyle Schempp forced a takeaway at the Omaha blue line before streaking in on the wing and burying his ninth goal of the year. The unassisted five-on-five tally came 10:36 into the opening period of play.
The 1-1 deadlock remained through much of the second period until, in the midst of a four-on-three power play, Jake Randolph was able to collect a puck off the end boards before snapping in his ninth goal of the season. Matias Cleland and Tucker Poolman assisted on the man-advantage marker scored 14:29 into the middle period. Omaha is now 21-5 when scoring a power play goal this season as Cleland garnered his league-leading 16th man-advantage helper of the year.
The Lancers then landed the eventual game-winning conversion just under seven minutes into the third period when a point shot by Tucker Poolman produced a rebound off Stampede goaltender Charlie Lindgren which was promptly backhanded in by Luca Frigo. Tyler Hynes earned the secondary assist on Frigo's eighth goal of the season and third game-winning tally this year. Sioux Falls trimmed the deficit back to a single goal just over three minutes later thanks to C.J. Franklin's 20th goal of the year but that's as close as the Stampede would get as Omaha hung on for its sixth home win over the last seven outings.
Lyon earned the victory in goal for the Lancers after 33 saves on 35 shots. With the win, the veteran netminder has now won five straight starts and nine of his last 10 appearances in goal. Lyon is now tied with the Stampede's Lindgren for the USHL-lead with 21 victories this season. Meanwhile, Lindgren suffered the loss for Sioux Falls despite 29 saves on 32 Lancers shots. Lindgren is now 21-9-2 on the year and 1-3 head-to-head against Omaha.
The Lancers are back in action this Friday evening when the team completes its home-and-home series with the Stampede at Sioux Falls Arena.
