Five-Goal Second Leads Whalers To 8-2 Romp Over Spits

January 24, 2013 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) - Windsor Spitfires News Release

(Windsor, ON) Matt Mistele and Vincent Trocheck each scored twice, as the Plymouth Whalers rode a five-goal second period to an 8-2 win over the Spitfires on Thursday night at the WFCU Centre.

Kerby Rychel and Alex Aleardi had the goals for Windsor (19-20-1-6), which saw its four-game win streak snapped in alarming fashion.

Already up 1-0 on a Trocheck shorthanded goal, Cody Payne and former Spitfire Zach Lorentz extended the lead to 3-0 with goals in a 29-second span of the opening period.

By the time Trocheck scored his second of the night, the visitors had themselves a five-goal, second period outburst and an 8-1 lead.

Kerby Rychel's 26th of the season was of little consolation, cutting the lead to 8-2 at 17:36.

Lorentz (1G, 2A), Trocheck (2G, 1A) and Matt Mistele (2G, 1A) each had three-point nights for Plymouth (24-14-5-3).

Aleardi added an assist to extend a couple streaks in his 300th OHL game: 11 games with at least a point and at least one assist. Both are the longest current streaks of their kind in the league.

Jaroslav Pavelka started in goal for Windsor, giving up three goals on 16 shots. He was pulled in favour of Jordan DeKort to begin the second period. DeKort allowed five goals on 23 shots.

The Spits are back at it tomorrow night in Sault Ste Marie as they take on the Greyhounds.
