Gladiators Weekly Update

January 14, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL) - Atlanta Gladiators News Release


The Gwinnett Gladiators earned three out of a possible four points as they went 1-0-0-1 last week in a pair of game against the Kalamazoo Wings. Gwinnett remains in first place in the South Division with 52 points and an overall record of 25-12-1-1. The Gladiators begin a stretch of five games in seven days on Tuesday at South Carolina. All five games of the stretch will be against South Division opponents.

South Carolina Preview: South Carolina dropped a 5-0 decision on Sunday at Wheeling. The Stingrays begin a seven game home stand with Tuesday's meeting. South Carolina is in fourth place in the South Division with an 18-19-1-3 record and 40 points, 12 points back of the first place Gladiators. The Stingrays have posted a 3-4-1-0 record against Gwinnett this season. The Stingrays are led net by Ryan Zapolski. The netminder ranks first among all league goaltenders with a 1.86 goals against average on the season.

Thursday, 1/17: Game @ Greenville, 7:00 PM

Greenville Preview: The Greenville Road Warriors are just three points out of first place in the South Division as they have earned 49 points with a 23-14-2-1 record this season. Greenville kept pace with Gwinnett in the race for the top spot in the South Division with a 5-2 win over Orlando on Saturday night. The season series is currently even with both teams posting four wins and three losses in regulation with the Gladiators notching a shootout win while the Road Warriors posted an overtime win over Gwinnett. Greenville is led in scoring by Brandon Wong who has 44 points off of 20 goals and 24 assists in 40 games this season.

Friday, 1/18: Game vs. Florida, 7:35 PM

Florida Preview: The Everblades knocked off the Toledo Walleye 4-3 on Saturday at the Germain Arena in their last outing. Florida enters the week on a three game win streak and have moved into third place in the South Division with a 18-13-3-4 record and 43 points. Mathieu Roy leads Florida in scoring this season with 37 points off of 13 goals and 24 assists in 35 games. His 24 assists is also tops on the Everblades this season. The Gladiators lead the season series with Florida with a record of 2-0-0-0 after a 7-6 victory at the Germain Arena on November 10th and a 4-3 overtime win at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on January 5th.

Saturday, January 12: Gwinnett 4, Kalamazoo 2 - W

Alex Belzile notched two first period goals to help lift the Gwinnett Gladiators to a 4-2 win over the Kalamazoo Wings on Saturday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Cody Carlson and Joey Haddad each notched their second goals of the season in the win for Gwinnett. Mike Lee finished with 21 saves for the Gladiators.

Sunday, January 13: Kalamazoo 4, Gwinnett 3 - SOL

The Gwinnett Gladiators dropped a 4-3 decision to the Kalamazoo Wings in a shootout on Sunday afternoon at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Trailing 3-2 late in the third period, Rylan Galiardi scored with six second left in regulation for Gwinnett to send the game to overtime. After a scoreless overtime period, Kalamazoo posted the win in the shootout by converting twice while Gwinnett's lone shootout goal came off the stick of Alex Belzile. Doug Jones had his 15th goal of the season and Andy Brandt collected his 7th marker for Gwinnett in the first shootout loss of the season.

News & Notes:

Streaking Along: Alex Belzile collected a pair of assists for the Gladiators in Sunday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Kalamazoo Wings. With his two assists, Belzile extends his point-scoring streak to five consecutive games which dates back to January 2nd at Fort Wayne. The St-Eloi, Quebec native has earned nine points (three goals, six assists) in his five game point-scoring streak.

On the Kill: Gwinnett held the Kalamazoo Wings scoreless on five power play chances in a 4-3 shootout loss on Sunday. The Gladiators currently sit in second overall in the ECHL on the penalty kill as they have killed off 85.6% of opponents power play chances this season. Gwinnett has allowed 22 power play goals on 155 chances. The Gladiators have allowed multiple power play goals in a game just four times this season.

Back on Track: Gladiators net minder Mike Lee turned in a stellar performance for Gwinnett to earn his 12th win of the season on Saturday night in a 4-2 victory over Kalamazoo. Lee made 27 saves for Gwinnett on Saturday for his third straight win. The netminder ranks second overall in the ECHL with a 2.05 goals against average and a .922 save percentage on the season.

Newcomers: The Gladiators added three new skaters to their roster last week. Gwinnett signed defensemen Tristin Llewellyn and Drew Baker in addition to forward Yuri Bouharevich. Llewellyn split time this season with Rapid City of the CHL and Fayetteville of the SPHL. Baker had nine points (1 goals, eight assists) in 29 games with Augusta of the SPHL before he joined the Gladiators. Bouharevich skated with Gwinnett in training camp this year after he completed his senior season at Quinnipiac University last year.

Movin' Up: Gladiators rookie Doug Jones collected a goal and an assist for Gwinnett in Sunday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Kalamazoo Wings. With two points on the night, the Marietta, Georgia native has totaled 31 points on the season to rank second in scoring among ECHL rookies this season and is just three points off the league lead of 34 held by Justin Maylan of Stockton. Jones has scored in 21 of 39 games this season for Gwinnett.

Back on Track: Gladiators captain Andy Brandt notched his 7th goal of the season for Gwinnett in Sunday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Kalamazoo Wings. For Brandt, it was his fourth consecutive game with at least one point. The Wausau, Wisconsin native has earned at least one point in 10 of the last 13 games for the Gladiators with four goals and 11 assists. A complete turn-around for the forward who had just two points (1g, 1a) in the first 16 games this season.
