Canton Takes Charge in Crunch Time to Defeat Idaho at 2013 NBA D-League Showcase
January 8, 2013 - NBA G League (G League) News Release
RENO, NEV., Jan. 8, 2013 - The Canton Charge broke out in the fourth quarter to defeat the Idaho Stampede 110-100 in day two of the 2013 NBA D-League Showcase. Both teams battled point-for-point throughout, as the game was knotted up at 51 at halftime. The Charge were able to take command in the fourth-quarter scoring 35 points to put away the Stampede.
Canton was led by Dominique Johnson, who came off the bench and knocked down a season-high 25 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the floor.
With 6:25 remaining in the fourth quarter, Canton received a boost from Kyle Gibson and Alex Ruoff. Ruoff connected on a three-pointer to force some separation and give the Charge a 92-88 lead. Gibson followed that up with a jumper of his own and Canton never looked back.
Gibson, a 6-5 guard from Louisiana Tech is in his second season with Canton, finished with 24 points in the contest. He returned to the team this season following a first-year campaign where he was named to the NBA Development All-Rookie Second team.
Idaho was playing its second game with Portland Trail Blazers assignee, Nolan Smith. While he didn't have the scoring outing he had yesterday vs. Texas, when he scored a game-high 28 points, the Stampede seemed to have an extra kick in their step with him out on the floor. Smith finished with 17 points and five assists.
The Stampede have another familiar face on their roster in Solomon Alabi. The 7-1 center from Nigeria has garnered interest from NBA teams since he was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2010 NBA Draft. Big men with talent have not been easy to come by the last few years in the NBA and many teams have taken a flyer on Alabi hoping he can take his game to the next level and fill a role. It was only two year ago when Ian Mahinmi after three years in the NBA D-League broke into the NBA, playing critical minutes for the Dallas Mavericks during their title run in 2010-11. Alabi recorded a double-double, scoring 13 points to go along with 13 rebounds.
Canton will be back in action on Thursday when they take on the Santa Cruz Warriors at 12:45 P.M. PST. Idaho has completed their stint at the 2013 NBA D-League Showcase and will return to action Friday vs. Reno.
