Mallette scores his 2nd of the year as Hounds drop trip finaleDecember 10, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) - Soo Greyhounds Press Release
For the Hounds they were looking for back-to-back wins for the 4th time this season, while Sarnia was looking to extend their regulation unbeaten streak to 7 games.
Just over five minutes in, NICK COUSINS rushed the right wing in behind the Sarnia defence but his low attempt was stopped by JP Anderson. Anderson, entered the game searching for his 115th OHL career victory, a win that would allow him to surpass former Hound Kyle Gajewski into the league record books.
On the Sting's 2nd shot of the game Daniel Nikandrov was given a feed from behind the line to MATT MURRAY'S left for his 3rd goal of the year and a 1-0 Sarnia lead. The goal came on the Sting's 2nd shot of the game, a shot total they would be held to over ten minutes into the game.
TRENT MALLETTE pulled the Hounds even pouncing on a rebound from an ALEX GUDBRANSON point shot to even things up. For Mallette, the goal marked his 2nd of his OHL rookie campaign.
Each team had a single powerplay in the first but were unable to capitalize as the Hounds outshot the Sting 11-6 in the period and skated to a 1-1 tie.
The Greyhounds were provided a glorious opportunity in the second to gain their first lead of the contest when Jordan Addessi and then Connor Murphy were tagged with penalties resulting in a two man advantage for 50 seconds, and later 5-on-4 but couldn't take advantage.
Sting scoring leader Alex Galchenyuk was all alone shorthanded and fired the Sting's 20th shot of the contest but tender MATT MURRAY came up with a big glove save to keep the game tied 1-1 after two periods.
After skating scoreless over midway through the third Sarnia would tally three unanswered goals.
Reid Boucher rifled a shot from in between the dots at 11:50, Galchenyuk notched his 22nd goal of the year blockerside at 13:39 and then David Brown scored at 17:01 as Sarnia built up and skated on to the 4-1 victory.
With the loss the Hounds returned to Sault Ste. Marie with 2 out of a possible 6 points on the trip and saw their record fall to 14-16-2-0 on the season.
The locals will cap off their pre-Christmas schedule with three games this coming week.
