Omaha Lancers News Release
Ralston, Neb. - Tucker Poolman and Frank Schumacher both scored Wednesday evening as Alex Lyon backstopped the Omaha Lancers to a 2-1 victory over the Fargo Force in front of 2,433 fans at Ralston Arena. With the win, Omaha improved to 11-10 on the year and moved into sole possession of fourth place in the Western Conference with 22 standings points. The win propelled the Lancers over the .500 mark for the first time this season as Omaha claimed its seventh win in the last eight games and ninth victory over the last 12 games overall.
Neither side found the back of the net in the opening period despite a combined 14 shots on goal. Lyon turned aside all nine Force shots that came his way in the first period while Fargo netminder Cameron Johnson answered the five Lancers shots on goal in the opening period of play.
Omaha broke the scoreless deadlock less than five minutes into the second period when, while on the power play, Poolman won a battle for a loose puck at the side of the net before stashing in his fourth goal of the season. Connor Chatham and Drew Melanson assisted on the man-advantage marker netted 4:56 into the middle period. The goal marked the 13th time in 20 games this season the Lancers have scored first and the eighth straight contest in which Omaha has generated the game's opening marker. The Lancers are now 10-3 when scoring first this season. Meanwhile, the primary assist for Chatham extended his scoring streak to a season-high six games. Omaha doubled its lead a little over five minutes later when Schumacher wheeled around the side of the goal before wrapping in his second goal of the season. Tyler Hynes and Kenny Gillespie assisted on the eventual game-winning strike notched 9:00 into the second period.
Fargo made its first and only dent on the score sheet 8:29 into the third period when Gabe Guertler buried his team-leading 13th goal of the season and USHL-leading fourth shorthanded tally of the year but it was too little too late for the Force. Omaha is now 3-0 head-to-head against Fargo this season.
Lyon earned the victory in goal for the Lancers after 28 saves on 29 shots. The veteran goaltender is now 8-9 on the year and has won five of his last six starts in cage. Meanwhile, Johnson suffered the loss for Fargo despite 29 saves on 31 Omaha shots.
The Lancers are back in action this coming Friday evening when the team welcomes the Lincoln Stars to the Ralston Arena for the first time ever.
