Chivas USA Weekly UpdateNovember 27, 2012 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Club Deportivo Chivas USA
The 2012/13 Chivas USA Youth Academy teams competed in the Nike Harvest Cup in Irvine, Calif. this past holiday weekend, highlighted by the U9s and two nail-biting matches that were decided on penalty kicks.
Under-8s Played Up in the Second Flight of Under 9 Division
The U8s competed in an older age group bracket and faced quality opponents. The little Goats were not able to advance out of the group stage but will return to their SCDSL play this Sunday, as they conclude their season with a two-game jamboree in El Segundo.
Under 9 Harvest Cup Champions
The U9s came away with yet another tournament championship. The 9s won their group on Friday and Saturday, out-scoring their opponents 21-3 to earn a finals showdown Sunday with Celtic. The 9s took a 1-0 lead into halftime but soon found themselves down 2-1. Christian Torres evened the game with a textbook side volley off Giovanni Ortega's corner kick. In overtime Dennis Rodriguez scored the game-winner, helping the little Goats secure the 3-2 victory. Ortega earned Player of the Tournament honors for his weekend performance.
The U10s were unable to make it out of group play. Despite coming up short the 10s displayed goog soccer against quality opponents. The 10s will finish out their SCDSL season with two showcase games on Sunday in Woodland Hills.
Under 11s Come Up Short on Penalty Kicks
The U11s played some of their best soccer this past weekend. They breezed through pool play with wins over Impact United and Colton Academy. In the semifinals they faced their cross-town rival Golden State. It was a tale of two halves. Golden State controlled the first half with a one-goal advantage. The young Goats found the equalizer in the second half with a stunning volley from Victor Perez. The game headed to penalty kicks as both teams were exhausted from an action-packed match. Despite two stops by Chivas goalkeeper Martin Delgado, Golden State prevailed 3-2 on penalty kicks. The little Goats play their final SCDSL game this Saturday in Whittier and with a win, clinch first place in the U11 Flight I.
Under 14s Come Up Short in Finals
The U14s opened their tournament play on Friday against RSF Attack 98 on a wet & foggy morning and came away with a 2-1 win. Later that afternoon, as the weather warmed up, Chivas posted an impressive and dominating 4-2 win against Future Stars. On Saturday afternoon, the U14s played their third game against Real Sac FC Atlas 98. The stakes were high in the match, as Real Sac battled hard since they were in a must-win situation to win Bracket A and reach the finals. Chivas on the other hand needed a tie to do the same. Chivas struck first, but within a few minutes Real Sac scored the equalizer. Chivas knocked in the game-winner in the second half and posted a 2-1 victory to earn their spot in the final.
On Sunday, with temperatures hovering in the low 40s, Chivas played SCDSL BU14 Champions Pats Irvine in San Juan Capistrano. Chivas dominated from the first whistle and created scoring opportunities, but it was Pats Irvine that scored first on a counterattack. The young Goats stormed back with back-to-back goals from Diego Escobar to give Chivas a 2-1 lead. In the second half Pats Irvine scored off a free kick to even the score. Later in the half, Pats Irvine fouled Caesar Ramon in the penalty box and the referee awarded a penalty kick, but Chivas could not convert as Pats goalkeeper made crucial save. Locked in a 2-2 battle, Escobar was taken down by a Pats defender inside the penalty area. The referee initially awarded a penalty kick, only to overturn the call in favor of a corner kick after consulting with the linesman. 10 minutes of stoppage time was added after regulation, but the match was to be decided on penalty kicks. The young Goats came up short of the title as they fell in the penalty round.
