
Solar Bears Outlasted in 6-5 Shootout Loss

Orlando, FL - C Ryan Cruthers recorded a Gordie Howe hat trick, helping the Solar Bears earn a point in a 6-5 shootout loss to the Greenville Road Warriors at the Amway Center on Sunday Afternoon.
The Road Warriors got off to a strong start, scoring twice in the first 7:10 of the game. F Shayne Wiebe blasted a shot over the shoulder of G Mike Brodeur at 4:38, and F Sean Berkstresser made it 2-0 when he intercepted a clearing pass and buried a shot for his third goal of the season. A late-period power play allow ed Orlando cut the lead in half, as F Olivier Fortier put home a back-hand shot with 3:27 left in the period.
Less than five minutes into the second frame, Cruthers fired a pass to RW Kevin Baker, who redirected a shot into the back of net while on the power play to tie the game at 2-2. D Kyle Medvec broke the tie at 12:38 when he blasted a shot from the left point over the glove of G Nathan Lieuwen, and Cruthers capped off a three-goal second period with a power play goal from the left half-wall as the Solar Bears carried a 4-2 lead into the third.
F Marc-Olivier Vallerand cut the score to 4-3 at 2:54 of the third period, but F Rob Mignardi restored the two goal lead when he deflected in a shot from LW Nick Petersen. With 2:54 remaining in regulation, F Jordie Johnston deflected home a shot from D Rob Kwiet and Berkstresser added his second of the game with just 11 seconds left in regulation. Despite Orlando out-shooting Greenville 7-0 in extra time, the Road Warriors were able to force a shootout, where they prevailed to earn a 6-5 victory.
