Alaska Aces News Release
Mark Guggenberger made 23 saves for his first ECHL shutout, and Chris Haltigin scored the only goal of the game in his pro debut, as the Alaska Aces blanked the Utah Grizzlies 1-0 on Saturday night from the Sullivan Arena. The Aces improved to 2-2 on the season, and earned a weekend split with Utah. The Aces continue the home stand next week with three games against the expansion San Francisco Bulls. Tickets are currently on sale at the Aces office, Fred Meyer locations and www.ticketmaster.com. All Aces games can be heard on NewsTalk 103.7FM and 750AM KFQD. The Aces began the game outshooting the Grizzlies 10-2, but for the second straight game Andrew Engelage was outstanding. Guggenberger matched Engelage, stopping every shot he faced through the first two periods. The game went scoreless through the first two periods with the Aces outshooting Utah 24-13 through the opening 40 minutes.
In the third period, the Aces finally broke the scoreless tie. Nick Mazzolini created a turnover, stripping former Ace Mark Isherwood and feeding the puck to the slot. On a delayed penalty Haltigin grabbed the puck from the high slot and wristed a shot past Engelage at 4:47 to give the Aces a 1-0 lead and give the rookie out of R.I.T. his first pro goal. Utah scrambled for the equalizer for the remainder of regulation, but Guggenberger and the Aces held Utah at bay, and protected the 1-0 lead to split the weekend.
Mark Guggenberger (1-1) earned the win making 23 saves on 23 shots while Andrew Engelage (3-1) took the loss, making 38 saves on 39 shots. The Aces went 0-8 on the power play and the Grizzlies went 0-4. Alaska outshot Utah 39-23 in the game.
