Erie Otters News Release
Windsor, Ont. - Oscar Dansk had an outstanding game with 45 saves but he was unable to lead the Erie Otters to a win as the Windsor Spitfires squeaked out a 2-1 victory Thursday night.
The first period was even as neither team could get on the board. Otters goaltender Dansk made the best save of the period as he stopped Kerby Rychel on a shorthanded breakaway in the dying seconds of the period.
The Spitfires scored the lone goal of the second period after a bizarre turn of events leading to a seven minute power play for the hometown team. Patrick Sieloff leveled Hayden Hodgson with a check to the head, and Adam Pelech rushed to his teammate's defense to take on Sieloff.
Sieloff never returned the favor, as he did not fight Pelech. The decision made by the referees gave Pelech 17 minutes in penalties plus a game misconduct, and none to Sieloff. Kerby Rychel scored during the power play with 5.9 seconds left to break the scoreless tie.
Derek Schoenmakers scored 42 seconds into the third to double the Windsor lead to 2-0.
Connor McDavid gave the Otters some hope as he scored his fifth goal of the season with 9:30 remaining. McDavid fired a shot from the slot through the blocker side of Jaroslav Pavelka to put the Otters on the board. The goal increased McDavid's point-scoring streak to a league-best nine games.
Next up for the Otters is a test against the London Knights Friday night at 7:00 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on NHL Network.
The Otters return to Erie Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. against the Spitfires for Lake Erie Monsters Night at Erie Insurance Arena. The Monsters Hockey Girls and Sully are making the trip from Cleveland to entertain Otters fans! For tickets, call 814-452-4857 or go to OttersHockey.com.
