Solar Bears Add AHL All-Star John Curry

Orlando, FL - The Orlando Solar Bears announced today that they have agreed to terms with goaltender John Curry.Curry (5'11", 185 lbs.) has appeared in four NHL games throughout his professional career. He posted a 2-1-0 record, 2.40 GAA, and .913 save percentage in three games with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2008-09. Last season, Curry played in 42 games for the Hamburg Freezers in the DEL (Germany) with a 22-20-0 record, 2.73 GAA, and .917 save percentage. During his AHL career (2008-2011), Curry posted a 103-59-6 record, .907 save percentage, and 2.49 GAA, all as a member of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He appeared in the AHL (American Hockey League) All-Star game in 2010-11 and won the "Harry Holmes Trophy" for the best goaltending duo in the AHL. Curry collected a 2.44 GAA and .905 save percentage while going 23-13-0 that season. The Shorewood, Minnesota, native was named the ECHL Goaltender of the Week in 2007-08 as a member of the Las Vegas Wrangers.
A "Hobey Baker Award" finalist for the top NCAA Hockey Player in 2006-07, Curry spent four seasons (2003-07) with Boston University (NCAA) before turning pro. In 2006-07, he was named a First-Team All-American, was the Hockey East Player of the Year, won the New England Region MVP, and had a record of 17-10-8 with a 2.01 GAA and .928 save percentage. Curry finished his college career with a record of 59-29-15 and finished with a 2.08 GAA and .923 save percentage.
"John is a tremendous goaltender who has an excellent professional resume," said Head Coach Drake Berehowsky. "He has proven his ability at both the NHL and AHL levels, and will be a great asset to our team."
The Orlando Solar Bears, the ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Minnesota Wild and AHL's Houston Aeros, are coming Out of Hibernation and will play 36 regular season home games at the 2012 Street and Smith's Sports Business Journal Sports Facility of the Year, the Amway Center, beginning October 20, 2012.
