Lancers Score Late to Tie, Win 3-2 in Shootout in Sioux CityOctober 6, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Omaha Lancers
Neither side was able to find the back of the net in the opening period despite a combined 13 shots on goal. Lyon turned aside the nine Musketeers shots that came his way in the first period while Sioux City netminder Joe Ballmer answered the four Lancers shots he faced in period one, including a point blank opportunity for Matt Gaudreau in the dying moments of the opening frame.
Sioux City broke the scoreless deadlock just prior to the midway point of the contest when David Henry cleaned up a rebound in the slot for his first goal of the season. Jake Montgomery earned the only assist on the five-on-five tally netted 8:38 into the middle stanza.
Omaha evened the game just past the midway point of the third period when, while on the power play, Ben Ostlie launched a left point one-timer into the back of the Musketeers cage for his first goal of the season and just the second marker of his USHL career. Vince Pedrie and Eli Lichtenwald assisted on the man-advantage goal notched 12:08 into the third period. Sioux City regained the lead with just over two minutes left in regulation when, in the midst of another Lancers power play, David Goodwin broke away shorthanded and made no mistake in landing his first goal of the season. The unassisted shorthanded marker came 17:54 into the final period and was the second shorthanded tally surrendered by Omaha in the team's first four games. The Lancers remained resilient though and evened the game with just four seconds remaining when, with another power play and Lyon back to the bench in favor of the extra attacker, Tucker Poolman sent a shot from the high slot between the legs of Ballmer for his first career USHL tally. Drew Melanson garnered the only assist on game-tying tally notched 19:56 into period three.
After a scoreless overtime, Omaha completed its comeback when Melanson netted the only goal of the shootout propelling the Lancers to their first victory of the season. Lyon earned the win in goal after 30 saves on 32 Musketeers shots. The veteran goaltender is now 1-3 on the year and has registered 30 or more saves in three of his four starts to date. Meanwhile, Ballmer suffered the shootout loss for Sioux City after 28 saves on 30 Lancers shots.
The Lancers are back in action next Friday evening when they travel to Des Moines for a 7:05 PM showdown with the Buccaneers.
