Condors Topple the Thunder in Preseason Opener

October 6, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL) Bakersfield Condors

CONDORSTOWN, Calif. - Newcomer LW Zach Cohen had two goals and returning G Brian Stewart made 28 saves for the Bakersfield Condors en route to a physical 4-0 trumping of the Stockton Thunder in preseason action Friday night at Rabobank Arena.

Cohen gave the Condors a 1-0 lead at 4:57 of the first period as his shot was redirected off a Thunder skate and past Stockton G Ryan Klingensmith. Bakersfield held a 14-11 advantage in shots through 20 minutes, despite being shorthanded twice in the period.

After a scoreless second period, the Condors blew the game open in a fight-filled third. D Olivier Dame-Malka potted his first of the preseason, adding to his first period assist on the night, just :53 into the frame. Cohen put up his second of the night at 7:34, off a feed from F Anthony Perdicaro to make it 3-0. F David Toews netted the Condors fourth and final tally at the 8:00 mark and then the scraps ensued. Over the remaining 12 minutes of playing time, 44 minutes in penalties were handed out, including three fights.

Stewart held down the fort, kicking out eight of his 28 saves on the night in the third frame as Bakersfield pulled away. The Condors penalty kill negated seven Stockton power plays as well on the evening.
