Youngstown, Ohio - The Youngstown Phantoms scored four goals in the third period and received four points from Austin Cangelosi Friday evening in a 5-3 victory over the Omaha Lancers at the Covelli Centre on opening night of the 2012-2013 season.
Omaha grabbed the game's opening goal and the only goal of period one a little over six minutes into the first frame when Jake Randolph's aggressive pursuit on the forecheck produced a turnover in the slot which was promptly stashed home by Drew Melanson. The even strength goal notched 6:02 into the first period was Melanson's first career USHL marker.
Youngstown evened the tilt just prior to the midway point of the contest when a two-on-one between Alfred Larsson and Luke Stork resulted in Larsson's first career USHL tally. The five-on-five marker came 9:07 into the second period. The Lancers were quick to respond though and regained the lead just under six minutes later when a two-on-one of their own resulted in a rebound in the slot, which was quickly tucked under the crossbar by Tyler Hynes. Connor Chatham garnered the only assist on Hynes' first USHL goal, which came 14:42 into the middle frame.
The Phantoms evened the game back up just 17 seconds into the final period when Cangelosi tucked in his first goal of the season from Todd Koritzinsky. Youngstown then grabbed its first lead of the night just past the midway point of the third period when a clean faceoff win in the offensive zone produced Eric Sweetman's first goal of the year 12:25 into the third period. Cangelosi and Daniel Renouf assisted on the five-on-five marker. The Lancers bounced back immediately though and tied the game just 1:24 later when Randolph found a streaking Alex Rauter in the slot who chipped in his first goal of the year. Vince Pedrie grabbed the secondary assist on the even strength goal netted 13"39 into the final period. The Phantoms grabbed the lead for good though exactly four minutes later when a loose puck scramble in Omaha's defensive end landed on the stick of Renouf who steered in his first goal of the season. Cangelosi and Sam Anas assisted on the eventual game-winning goal. Youngstown added an insurance tally with 16 seconds left in regulation when Ryan Lowney netted a shorthanded empty net strike from Cangelosi.
Youngstown's Sean Romeo earned the victory in goal after 26 saves on 29 Lancers shots. Meanwhile, Omaha's Alex Lyon suffered the setback despite 34 saves on 38 shots.
The Lancers are back in action tomorrow evening when they head to Indianapolis for a 7:05 PM EST showdown with the Ice.
