Four-Goal Second Period Leads Lancers 5-2 over Sioux City

September 22, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL) Omaha Lancers

Sioux City, IA - The Omaha Lancers scored five unanswered goals, including four in the second period, Saturday night en route to a 5-2 victory over the Sioux City Musketeers on the final day of the 2012 USHL Fall Classic. Omaha finished the exhibition tournament with a 2-1 record and closed the preseason with an overall mark of 4-1. The Lancers begin their run through the 64-game regular season schedule next Friday evening at the Youngstown Phantoms.

Sioux City opened the scoring just past the midway point of the first period when an Omaha giveaway in the defensive end led to a two-on-one between Conor McGlynn and David Goodwin, which McGlynn converted for his third goal of the Fall Classic. The five-on-five marker came 10:06 into the opening period of play. The Musketeers doubled their lead a little over seven minutes later when McGlynn and Goodwin connected again for McGlynn's second goal of the game and fourth of the preseason. The even strength strike came 17:17 into period one.

Omaha sliced Sioux City's lead in half just 1:05 into the second period when Alex Rauter netted his third goal of the Fall Classic. The Lancers then evened the game just over a minute later when, while shorthanded, Vince Pedrie's centering pass deflected off the leg of Gage Hough before bounding into the back of the Sioux City net. The shorthanded goal scored 2:06 into the second period was Omaha's first shorthanded goal scored this preseason. Omaha grabbed its first lead of the night a little over five minutes into the frame when Luca Frigo sprung free on a breakaway before netting his second goal of the preseason. Rauter and goaltender Alex Lyon assisted on the even strength goal notched 5:38 into the middle stanza. The Lancers capped their explosive second period with their second shorthanded goal of the frame when Kenny Gillespie slipped behind the Sioux City defense before sliding in his first goal of the preseason. The man-down marker came 11:28 into the second period.

The Lancers added one final insurance marker just under six minutes into the final period when Eli Lichtenwald found Hough alone atop the Sioux City goal crease before Hough deposited his second goal of the game. The contest's final marker came 5:59 into period three.

Lyon earned the victory in goal for Omaha after 24 saves on 26 Musketeers shots on goal. Frank Oplinger, who replaced Lyon late in the third period, turned away the four shots he faced in relief. Meanwhile, Austin Priebe suffered the loss in goal for Sioux City after 14 saves on 17 Lancers shots. Joe Ballmer, who replaced Priebe at the midway point of the game, earned a no-decision after recording 15 saves on 17 shots.

The Lancers are back in action next Friday evening when they kick off the 2012-2013 regular season with a 7:15 PM EST showdown at the Youngstown Phantoms.
