Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut - With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eight and leading by one, the Skeeters relinquished a late lead off Joey Gathright's game-winning two RBI single dropping game four 3-2 Sunday afternoon at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The Skeeters end the regular season overall series against the Bluefish (11-9).
The Skeeters hoped to win the second half from the Bluefish with a win in game four Sunday afternoon at Harbor Yard. Bubba Bell gave Sugar Land a 1-0 lead early in the top of the second with a RBI double into right that brought Steve Moss in after a one-out walk and stolen base.
Michael Nix was named the starter after coming off three days of rest for the Skeeters in the finale. After pitching flawlessly against the Somerset Patriots at the start of the road trip, Nix doubled his performance with six-scoreless innings against the Bluefish. The righty gave up six scattered hits and walked two while striking out four.
Bell doubled the lead for Sugar Land with a RBI single off starter Jonah Bayliss in the top of the seventh right before the stretch. Dionys Cesar reached to start the inning off an error from the right fielder Prentice Redman. Cesar ended up on second because of it, and after moving to third on Josh Pressley's fly-out to center, he scored on the single, 2-0.
Bayliss worked seven innings for the third time this season but left in-line for the loss after giving up two runs on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Dustin Richardson replaced Nix and secured a scoreless seventh, but left with two outs and one on base in the eighth. Jeff Farnsworth (2-5) entered the game to get the Skeeters to the finish line.
However, Farnsworth gave up back-to-back singles to Luis Figueroa and Brad Boyer to load the bases with two outs. In the next at-bat, Angel Flores walked in the first run of the game on a full-count to halve the lead, 2-1. Manager Gary Gaetti switched pitcher and brought in closer Gary Majewski to end the inning. Joe Gathright was the first batter Majewski faced, and on the first pitch, he lined it underneath the glove of first baseman Aaron Bates bringing two runs around to give the home team a 3-2 lead. Flores was thrown out on the relay throw at third to end the inning but the damage was already done.
Pat Bresnahan (1-0) worked an inning and a third of scoreless baseball without giving up a run or a walk before Rommie Lewis recorded the final two outs of the game for the save (6), his second of the series.
Coming up next...The Sugar Land Skeeters (33-31) return home for its final series of the 2012 season against the York Revolution (39-25) starting Tuesday night from Constellation Field.
