Dubuque struck first 2:27 into the game on a goal by Tafoya who walked out on the left side and snuck a shot inside the right post to give Dubuque an early lead. The second period saw the game break open as the two teams traded goals. Cedar Rapids scored a five-on-three powerplay goal off the stick of Gavin Bayreuther on a blast of a slapshot from the right point. Dubuque would tally the next two goals, with the first coming from Jarrid Privetera on a beautiful passing play setup by Shane Sooth. Alex Fossen would make it a two-goal lead with a powerplay goal on a wrist shot that found the top half of the net minutes later.
Cedar Rapids would respond with a pair of goals from Andrew Oglevie 14:28 and 18:15 from the same spot on the ice in front of net to tie the game at three. The lead did not last long, as Dubuque responded just 21 seconds later as Fossen finished a two-on-one for what turned out to be the game-winning goal.
The second and third periods would get chippy as four ten-minute misconducts were handed out during the game and the teams combined for 99 penalty minutes.
The Fighting Saints and the RoughRiders complete the home-and-home exhibition slate tomorrow at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena with a 7:05 p.m. puck drop as preseason play continues. The game will be broadcast on Dubuque's Super Hits 106.1 with Zack Fisch having the call from Cedar Rapids. The Fighting Saints open the regular season at the Mystique Community Ice Center on September 28 versus Tri-City at 7:35 p.m.
