Sparks Forward Nneka Ogwumike Named Rookie of the Month

September 4, 2012 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) Los Angeles Sparks

Los Angeles - For the third time this season, the WNBA named Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike the Rookie of the Month, this time for games played from Aug.16-Aug. 31.

Ogwumike placed second among all rookies in rebounds (7.6 rpg) and field goal percentage (.548) and ranked third in scoring (12.0 ppg). Overall, Ogwumike ranked seventh in field goal percentage and ninth in rebounds. In the first game back from the Olympic break, Ogwumike had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds; she also contributed four assists in an 82-71 win over the Seattle Storm on Aug. 21. For the month, she contributed to a 4-1 record while posting two double-doubles in five games and scored in double digits in all but one contest.

The first overall pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft presented by Boost Mobile, Ogwumike is averaging 13.5 points and 7.5 rebounds for the Sparks, who have clinched a playoff spot and currently place second in the West with a 19-8 record.

Highlights of Ogwumike's month included:

- Aug. 18 vs. Seattle: Double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in an 82-71 win

- Aug. 21 vs. Indiana: Double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in a 79-69 win

- Aug. 30 vs. Tulsa: 15 points and 6 rebounds in a 99-85 loss
