New Britain Rock Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - Portland's Peter Hissey delivered an RBI single in the top of the tenth inning to give the Sea Dogs a 4-3 victory over New Britain in front of 5,969 fans on Monday night.
The Sea Dogs' Jackie Bradley opened the game with a base hit into right field against B.J. Hermsen. Jeremy Hazelbaker followed with a one-out single to center. Bradley rounded the bag on the hit and fell to the ground in his attempt to return to second. He would leave the game with a leg injury. After a 22-minute delay to tend to the field, Hermsen returned to the mound to force an inning-ending double play on a fly out and escape the jam.
The Rock Cats broke out the bats in the bottom of the first with four consecutive base hits. Leadoff man Aaron Hicks lined a base hit into center and Chris Herrmann followed with a single to right. A wild pitch by Drake Britton allowed Hicks to score the first run of the night. Oswaldo Arcia singled to put Herrmann at third with no outs. Chris Colabello then singled to center to score Herrmann for the 2-0 lead. It was Colabello's Eastern League-leading 90th RBI of the season. The Rock Cats first baseman has the chance to break the franchise RBI single season record - needing eight more RBI to surpass current record holder Steve Hacker.
Hermsen held the Sea Dogs scoreless until the fourth when Xander Bogaerts led off the inning with a single and Hissey doubled him in to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
In the seventh, Ryan Dent's two-run double put the Sea Dogs on top for the first time of the night, 3-2.
The Rock Cats tied the game in the eighth. Herrmann led off with a walk but was forced out at second when Colabello grounded to shortstop. Colabello reached first safely on the play. Deibinson Romero then hit a drive into center that was mishandled by Hissey and allowed Colabello to score.
Hissey got his revenge in the tenth, though. With Rock Cats reliever Aaron Thompson on the mound, Travis Shaw led off with a double and Bogaerts followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Thompson (3-8) picked off Bogaerts at first for the first out of the inning before Hissey singled into center to score Shaw for the go-ahead run.
Jason Urquidez (4-2) picked up the win in relief, firing two shutout innings.
Hermsen was hammered for 11 hits but only allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out five and came away with the no-decision.
ALLSTATE PLAYER OF THE GAME : 1B Chris Colabello was 1-for-5 with an RBI for the Rock Cats. He scored the run in the eighth that tied the game and sent it into extra innings.
