Crabs Scuttle by 'Fish

(Bridgeport, Conn. - August 20, 2012) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (19-17, 50-56) lost the opener of the series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (18-20, 53-55) at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Monday by a score of 4-0. The Bluefish are 6-8 against the Blue Crabs this season and now trail Southern Maryland by one-and-a-half games in the second half Liberty Division standings.

Bridgeport outfielder, Prentice Redman reached base twice as he had a single and a walk. Luis Lopez, Brad Boyer and James Simmons had the other hits for the home team while Kennard Jones walked in one of his four plate appearances.

The Blue Crabs scored all of the teams' runs on homers. Richard Mercado broke a scoreless tie with a two-run drive to left in the fourth. Consecutive solo homers by Jesse Gutierrez and Matt Padgett extended the lead to four runs.

Bluefish starter, Brad Thompson (3-2), had a complete game but suffered the loss. The righthander allowed four runs on eleven hits while fanning five. David Jones (2-4) picked up the win as he worked seven scoreless and gave up three hits and two walks while striking out six. Bridgeport produced one hit and one strikeout in the final two frames against Eduardo Morlan out of the bullpen.

The Bluefish continue a four-game series at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 with the gates opening one hour before first pitch. It is Kid's Eat Free Tuesday presented by Big Y World Class Market. Bridgeport will send southpaw starter, Dan Serafini (5-3, 4.06 ERA) to the mound against Southern Maryland righthanded hurler Daryl Thompson (1-1, 3.18 ERA).
