INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - On September 8, Missouri Mavericks' defenseman David Simoes and the American Red Cross are asking for voluntary donors to roll up their sleeves and donate blood from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. during the Mavericks' Fan Fest at Independence Events Center, 19100 East Valley View Parkway, Independence, MO.

Mavericks' defenseman David Simoes knows all too well the importance of blood donations. In fact, a donation may be what helped save his daughter's life. Lucy Simoes, pictured with her father, is two-and-a-half years old and is a healthy, rambunctious child. But she was born premature, and weighed just one pound, 10 ounces when she was delivered. David said for him and his wife, seeing their newborn in a hospital, strapped to machines, "was definitely a scary time."

As part of her treatment, tiny Lucy was given a blood transfusion. As quick as a wrist shot, upon receiving that transfusion David said Lucy's color began to change and she began looking better and healthier. Now, she and her family are doing fine.

"In the end, it made her stronger and it brought my wife and I closer together," David said.

Fans can join David Simoes and other Mavericks' players and staff at the Mavericks Fan Fest and blood drive on September 8. You could help save a life, or prolong the life of someone in need.

"Even if your blood can't save someone, you're going to help someone regardless," David said.

"We are excited to partner with the American Red Cross and incorporate a blood drive this year at Fan Fest; it is a great opportunity for the Mavericks and our fans to make a difference," said Brent Thiessen, Mavericks President and General Manager. "David Simoes is leading the charge with the blood drive and his personal story is a moving one. We hope that many of you will consider giving blood at this year's Fan Fest."
