Mississippi Braves News Release
Chattanooga, TN - The Mississippi Braves and Chattanooga Lookouts did all they could to get nine innings in on Sunday afternoon, but they had to settle for seven as the Lookouts took it 6-4 at AT&T Field.
The rains came in the middle of the seventh with the Braves trailing 5-4. A small window opened on the radar after a delay of more than an hour, so the teams played the bottom of the seventh, with the Lookouts scoring another run, before going back into delay and eventually being rained out 30 minutes later.
It was a back-and-forth game, with the Braves (18-24; 48-64) striking first in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Tim Smith doubled off Lookouts starter Allen Webster and came in to score a batter later on Phil Gosselin's single.
The Lookouts (25-18; 57-54) came right back with the first of three lead changes on the night. JT Wise led off the fourth inning with a first-pitch single to left. On the second pitch, Blake Smith doubled, scoring Wise to tie the game 1-1. Two batters later, former Mississippi Brave CJ Retherford singled to score Smith and put the Lookouts ahead 2-1.
The lead didn't last long. Mississippi tied the game 2-2 when Joe Leonard walked with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, scoring Todd Cunningham from third. The Braves took a 3-2 lead in the sixth when Gosselin was hit by a pitch to lead off and came around to score on Cunningham's two-out double.
With storms looming on the horizon, the Lookouts scored three clutch runs. A Luis Nunez two-run pinch-hit single off of reliever Jose Lugo put Chattanooga up 4-3, and Nunez scored a batter later when Rafael Ynoa doubled. The 5-3 lead was enough, as the rain started coming down a half inning later.
Lugo took the loss, his third of the season, after J.R. Graham gave up two runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. Reliever Eric Eadington faced one hitter, striking out Keenan Wiley to end the sixth, and earned the win, his first at double-A.
The Braves scored a run on a Leonard RBI groundout in the top of the seventh, but the rains came and they ran out of time to complete the comeback. Chattanooga tacked on an extra run off of reliever Chris Jones after the game restarted.
The Braves and Lookouts square off for the fourth game of a five-game series on Monday night at 6:15 PM CT. Southern League ERA-leader Gary Moran (4-9, 3.13) takes the mound against Chattanooga right-hander Zach Lee (0-3, 7.58). Fans can listen live on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com beginning at 6:00 PM CT with the Vicksburg Toyota "Countdown to First Pitch."
