Miller Delivers 9th Inning Walkoff for Generals

JACKSON, TENN. (AUGUST 5, 2012) - Brad Miller brought in Kalian Sams with a single to right in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday, giving Jackson a 5-4 walkoff win over the Tennessee Smokies. The Generals took a 2-1 series edge with the win at Pringles Park, leading the season series over the Smokies 15-7. Jackson remains 1 1/2 games back in the SL second half standings.

The Smokies scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings to put the Generals in an early 3-0 deficit.

Stefen Romero led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer to center. The blast was Romero's seventh in Double-A and his second in as many games. Jackson followed with subsequent singles by Joe Dunigan, Rich Poythress, and Chih-Hsien Chiang with Dunigan and Poythress plating two more runs in the inning.

Jackson took a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning when Poythress was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Tennessee tied it back up on a throwing error in the seventh inning.

The game remained knotted at four until the bottom of the ninth inning. Kalian Sams led-off with a single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Nate Tenbrink. Brad Miller came to the plate with two outs and delivered a single to right field. Sams scored on a play at the plate to give the Generals the 5-4 victory. The walk-off victory was Jackson's first since June 1.

RHP Brandon Maurer threw a quality start for Jackson, allowing three earned runs through 6-2/3 innings of work. Maurer struck out nine, allowed seven hits and four total runs in the game. Reliever Logan Bawcom (4-3, 2.39) earned his first win for Jackson after pitching a scoreless, one-hit ninth inning.

Rich Poythress and Kalian Sams were each 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The Generals will play game four against the Smokies on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Taijuan Walker (7-6, 4.12) will start for Jackson against RHP Dae-Eun Rhee (7-5, 5.09) for Tennessee. The game can be heard on NewsTalk 101.5 FM, jacksongeneralsbaseball.com and the Generals TuneIn Radio Station.
