Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA: The Hudson Valley Renegades fell short against the State College Spikes 1-0 Friday night in front of 3,021 fans at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Hudson Valley (29-16) couldn't muster a comeback after surrendering the game's lone run to State College (24-21) in the bottom of the seventh inning. The 'Gades saw their lead in the McNamara Division of the New York-Penn League dwindle to two games with the Brooklyn Cyclones' 3-0 victory over the Connecticut Tigers.
The Spikes nearly broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Jacob Stallings drew a two-out walk from 'Gades starter Jeff Ames, and Chris Diaz ripped a double to right field. Right fielder Charles Epperson sprinted over and pegged a rocket of a cut-off throw to shortstop Ryan Dunn, who fired home. Catcher Luke Maile applied the tag on Stallings sliding in to end the inning.
The Renegades threatened in the top of the sixth against Spikes reliever and eventual game-winner Orlando Castro (1-0). Epperson drew a leadoff walk, and swiped second with one out. Center fielder Joey Rickard bounced a ball to second that Jodaneli Carvajal bobbled, allowing Rickard to reach safely. But the next two batters for the 'Gades struck out, ending the scoring opportunity with no tallies.
State College finally drew first blood in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Derek Trent lined a double to right field off Renegades reliever Kris Carlson (1-2). Carvajal grounded sharply to first baseman Michael Williams, who tried to flip to Carlson covering the bag. But the throw was errant, allowing Carvajal to reach second and letting Trent come home for the only run of the game.
Ames tossed 5.2 terrific innings, allowing three hits and two walks against six strikeouts; he hit two batters. Carlson took the loss, with only one run (unearned) given up on two hits in 1.1 innings of work. Jose Molina tossed a scoreless inning, allowing one hit.
Spikes starter Joely Rodriguez threw five scoreless innings, giving up just three hits. Castro got the win for three scoreless frames; he struck out four and allowed just one hit and one walk. Kyle Haynes threw a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save, fanning one.
The Renegades head to Jamestown Saturday looking to get back on the winning track. Right-hander Jesse Hahn will toe the rubber for the Renegades. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m., with Ben Gellman's pregame show beginning at 6:50 p.m. on 1450 and 1370 AM WKIP, as well as online at HVRenegades.com.
