Bakersfield Blaze News Release

In a night of frustration, the Bakersfield Blaze mustered 10 hits, but could not plate a run, and fell to the Stockton Ports, 6-0, on Josh Hamilton Bobblehead Night (presented by JACK-fm) at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

The Blaze had plenty of chances, but the Ports pitching staff locked down every time runners moved into scoring position.

Early in the game, Bakersfield twice put two runners aboard, but twice came up empty, and it was not until the 5th inning that either team broke through.

In the top of the 5th, Stockton came up with back-to-back 1-out singles off Blaze starter Tanner Robles (L, 2-2), and after a wild pitch, a grounder scored the first run to put the Ports on top, 1-0.

That was all tough-luck loser Robles would allow, as Tanner was dynamite again, going 6.0 innings, and allowing just a single run on 4 hits. But tonight, he was out-dueled by Stockton starter Josh Bowman (W, 4-8).

Bowman ended up going 6.1 innings of shutout ball, scattering 9 hits behind him while collecting his typical assortment of grounders and strikeouts with runners on base.

Then, it was up to the pen to keep it close, but the Blaze side struggled. Kyle McMyne allowed 3 runs in the 7th, and Andrew Brackman allowed 2 more in the 8th, making 8 consecutive innings in which the Blaze pen had allowed at least 1 run.

As it turned out, those runs would be purely aesthetic, as the Blaze were unable to bring anyone home on a tough Saturday night. The bright spots in the defeat belonged to Niko Vasquez, the Blaze second baseman who reached base on all 5 of his trips, going 4-4 with 3 singles, a double, a walk and a stolen bag, and, as noted, starter Robles.

One other bright spot was the Bakersfield fans, who showed up in big numbers for the 4th straight night, marking one of the largest homestands for Bakersfield baseball in many years!

The loss drops the Blaze to 15-21 in the second half, and just 56-50 on the season, overall. The team now wraps up the homestand tomorrow, Sunday, at 7:40pm, with Chad Rogers opposing Sean Murphy as the Blaze try to salvage one from the Ports.

It's Chevy Youth Baseball Kids Club Sunday, so bring your youngsters!
