Weekly Honors Go To Paredes And Martin
Published on July 23, 2012 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Jimmy Paredes of the Oklahoma City RedHawks and J.D. Martin of the New Orleans Zephyrs were recognized by the league office today as the best of the best from July 16th to 22nd, as they were awarded the Pitcher and Player of the Week awards respectively.
Paredes recorded at least one hit in all seven games last week, batting an even .500 (17-for-34) with three home runs and a double. His hot hitting included nine RBI and seven runs scored as the infielder helped the RedHawks take all four games in Omaha. Paredes' week was highlighted by a three-hit, four-RBI night on Monday against the Storm Chasers, which included a three-run home run as Oklahoma City won 16-6.
Born in Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic, Paredes signed as an amateur free agent in 2006 with the New York Yankees. In 2010, he was traded to Houston in a deal for Lance Berkman, and in 2011 was a Texas League All-Star with Corpus Christi before making his Major League debut on August 1st. This season Paredes is batting .332 with 10 home runs and 28 stolen bases for Oklahoma City, and was selected to the 2012 Pacific Coast League All-Star team.
Martin put together two strong starts last week as he held the Iowa Cubs and Nashville Sounds in check. On Monday in Iowa, the right-hander earned the win by going seven innings and allowing just four hits and one run while striking out four. In his follow-up start on Saturday against the Sounds he took a no-decision after going five innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out seven. His 11 strikeouts to zero walks showed excellent control, and his just six hits and two runs in 12 innings led to a 1.50 ERA and a 0.50 WHIP.
Martin, born in Ridgecrest, California, was a first-round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians in 2001. After eight seasons in the Cleveland organization, he signed a contract with the Washington Nationals and made his Major League debut for them on July 20th, 2009, against the New York Mets. In December 2011, Martin signed with the Miami Marlins and has gone 5-7 in 17 starts for the New Orleans Zephyrs.
