Round Rock Express News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Joey Butler clubbed five hits and scored three runs as the Round Rock Express defeated the Nashville Sounds 8-5 in Wednesday night's Pacific Coast League action at Herschel Greer Stadium. The Express (41-56) won consecutive games for the first time since June 23-24 and took a two-games-to-one lead in the series against the Sounds (42-55). The season series is tied 5-5.
Butler produced his second career five-hit game; he also had five hits July 16, 2010, with Double-A Frisco. It was Butler's first career Triple-A game with at least four hits and the fourth of his career. Butler pushed his hitting streak to 10 games; he is 16-for-40 during the streak with three multiple-hit efforts.
Trailing 4-3, Round Rock scored three runs in the fourth and never trailed again. Ryan Spilborghs walked and Joey Butler singled to open the inning. Yangervis Solarte tied the game with an RBI single, and Butler later scored the go-ahead run on Julio Borbon's bases-loaded infield single. Greg Miclat followed with a walk, forcing home Solarte.
That proved to be enough run support for starter Chad Bell (3-2), who allowed five runs on nine hits and a walk over seven innings with three strikeouts. It was the longest of his five outings at the Triple-A level. Johan Yan worked a scoreless eighth, and Yoshinori Tateyama struck out one in a perfect ninth for his second save.
Nashville starter and former Express member Seth McClung (2-12) took the loss; he allowed six runs on six hits and four walks over three and one-third innings with three strikeouts.
Eight of nine Express starters hit safely; although, Butler's was the lone multiple-hit outing. Miclat walked twice, and Luis Hernandez had two RBI. Ryan Spilborghs was 0-for-3, but he walked, was hit by a pitch and scored twice.
Eric Farris, Sean Halton, Taylor Green and Corey Patterson all had two-hit outings for the Sounds. Halton scored twice and had two RBI.
Round Rock took the game's first lead with a three-run second. Brad Nelson had a leadoff double and later scored on Butler's double. Hernandez added a sacrifice fly, and Elio Sarmiento delivered a two-out RBI single. Nashville rallied with a Jason Jaramillo sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning before scoring three runs on three hits in the third to take a 4-3 lead.
After Round Rock recaptured the lead in the fourth, Hernandez added an RBI double in the fifth, and Matt Kata tacked on an RBI single in the sixth. Patterson capped the scoring with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth.
Round Rock and Nashville conclude their four-game series Thursday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Justin Grimm (0-0, 2.25 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express against Sounds right-hander Claudio Vargas (3-1, 4.89 ERA).
