BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (July 18, 2012) - The New York Islanders announced today that Scott Pellerin has been named head coach of their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
Pellerin, 42, served as the assistant coach of the AHL's Manchester Monarchs the past six seasons after completing his professional playing career in 2004. Over his six seasons with the Monarchs, Pellerin assisted in leading the club to three post-season appearances and 188 combined regular and post-season victories.
"Scott brings tremendous experience to our organization, from not only coaching, but also his playing career," Islanders General Manager Garth Snow said. "Over the past six seasons with the Manchester Monarchs, he has developed numerous prospects into everyday NHL players, including current Islander Matt Moulson."
"I'm thrilled with the opportunity Charles Wang and Garth Snow have given me as Head Coach of the Sound Tigers," Pellerin said. "I look forward to working closely with Jack (Capuano) while at the same time developing the young prospects within the organization into everyday NHL players."
The Shediac, New Brunswick native is a veteran of 864 NHL and AHL games during his 13-year playing career that spanned from 1992-2004. Over that time, Pellerin collected 72 goals, 126 assists and 198 points in 536 games with the New Jersey Devils, St. Louis Blues, Minnesota Wild, Carolina Hurricanes, Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars and Phoenix Coyotes.
Pellerin was a member of the 1995 Calder Cup Champion Albany River Rats and totaled 304 points (120 goals, 184 assists) in 328 AHL games with the River Rats, Utica Devils, Worcester IceCats and Portland Pirates.
A graduate of the University of Maine in 1992, Pellerin earned Co-Rookie of the Year Honors in 1988, Player of the Year honors in 1992, MVP of the Hockey East Tournament in 1992 and the Hobey Baker Award Winner in 1992. Pellerin was the Devils' third round draft pick (47th overall) in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft.
