Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets picked up three first-inning runs - a good omen that led to a 3-1 win and a three-game series sweep over the Greenville Drive in front of 4,003 on Friday the 13th at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The GreenJackets loaded the bases against Greenville starter Noe Ramirez in the first inning on a pair of hits and a walk. With one out, Devin Harris hit a liner to left-center that fell in for a double to score two as the GreenJackets took a 2-0 lead - the fourth straight game in which Augusta has led first. Jose Cuevas capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-0 GreenJackets lead.
Three runs would be enough for Augusta starter Kyle Crick, who picked up his first win since his first start of the second half. In six scoreless innings, Crick (4-6) allowed two hits and three walks while striking out four. After walking back-to-back hitters with two outs in the sixth, Crick got out of the inning with a groundball to end his scoreless outing. Crick retired 12 of the final 14 hitters he faced.
The Drive got on the board in the eighth inning after Bryan Johns walked to lead off the frame and then scored on an RBI double from Keury De La Cruz to make it a 3-1 game. De La Cruz would be picked off second - a costly miscue that wiped what would be Greenville's final baserunner off the basepaths.
Cody Hall came on for the GreenJackets in the ninth inning and retired the side in order for his league-leading 16th save of the year. He is a perfect 16-16 in save opportunities. Shawn Payne - on his 23rd birthday - had half of Augusta's six hits with a three-hit performance.
Ramirez (0-3) settled down after the rough first inning and had a pretty solid start in the loss. In six innings, he allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four. Like Crick's run to end his outing, Ramirez retired 13 of the final 14 hitters he faced.
The sweep is Augusta's second of the year - both in home, three-game series. The GreenJackets have won three in a row and five straight at home as they welcome the West Virginia Power to town for a four-game series beginning Saturday. Adalberto Mejia (6-5, 4.69) takes the ball for the GreenJackets against West Virginia's Robby Rowland (5-2, 2.74). The GreenJackets will be honoring active and retired military members on Military Appreciation Night, one of the most poignant nights on the promotional calendar each year.
